John Paul Mitten, artist in residence

Family Help Trust is proud to present an emerging Christchurch artist who we have taken a particular interest in. John Paul Mitten first presented two of his works at our 2006 Charity Art Auction, and since then he has shown a keen interest in working alongside us on issues related to child abuse.

Introducing John Mitten:
I was born and raised in Christchurch, having lived most of my life in the suburb of Riccarton. My Cook Island heritage has significantly influenced my work, particularly in the way that I have introduced concepts of weaving and hand stitching.

I have always had a huge interest in all types of different skills and techniques but prefer to acquire new knowledge from experimentation rather than sitting in a classroom. With no formal education I am mostly self-taught but have also learned many a good thing from older and wiser like-minded people, giving me access to both old tricks and new tricks.

I am keen to produce work that is truly entertaining to the eye and mind of the viewer and am currently producing what I believe is a unique contemporary style, mixing elements of old and new and those slightly out of the square. For example, I have had a lot of fun with using all sorts of recycled goods and materials.

Working with many types of media has been a lot of fun as well as being a bit frustrating at times, but I belief that's all part of my learning experience and I am certain there are more challenges ahead.

I am delighted to be selected by Family Help Trust as their artist in residence and feel deeply saddened by the whole issue of family violence and child abuse in New Zealand. I believe there is a much greater need for public awareness and education to ensure that all New Zealanders have a better understanding of what is happening for our most vulnerable children. There are children out there that are living in the depths of despair . . . hurting and alone . . . always in constant fear.

Everyone needs to know that there is help available and that there are people to talk to and who want to break the cycle.

If you are interested in my work my contact details are: 021 0229 7648 and 03 343 2021

Several of John Paul's works can be viewed at the Bryce Gallery of Contemporary Fine art.
